Rahi Systems Announces the Availability of AppUpTime – Cloud and Migration Solutions.

“Software is eating the world”, an observation by Marc Andreesen is increasingly becoming a truism. The pace of transformation through software has accelerated with the adoption of cloud. As a result, cloud native companies are transforming the industries they compete in. Uber, the largest taxi company owns no vehicles; Facebook, the most popular social media company owns no content and Airbnb owns no real estate. In addition to cloud, microservices and containers along with DevOps methodology is helping smaller companies move and disrupt industries at lightning speed.

Enterprises have a stark choice – leverage cloud and microservices to transform themselves and the customer experience they offer or risk having their lunch eaten by new and agile cloud-native companies.

So what is cloud and how do I leverage it? Cloud computing enables companies to deliver IT resources and applications on an on-demand basis. Organizations avoid large up-front capital costs and scale up easily while reducing costs associated with maintenance and upgrade. Cloud typically delivers network, compute and storage along with a set of databases and services needed to host applications. Some of the most well known cloud provider companies include AWS, Google, Microsoft Azure, Digital Ocean and others.

Organizations need a cloud migration strategy to successfully migrate to the cloud and leverage the advantages of cloud. Typically, an IT organization will have hundreds if not thousands of applications that need to be migrated. Some of those will be homegrown and others from third-party vendors. Along with the type, applications will also differ in the degree of complexity as well as business criticality. As such, multiple considerations need to be taken into account before embarking on the cloud journey.

What are my options? The scenarios presented here provide a couple of options, each requires detailed planning, implementation, training and support.

  1. Hybrid Cloud

Enterprises choose to maintain their own data centers and leave business critical applications in the data center while migrating the rest of the applications to the public cloud. Rahi Systems provides an extensive data center portfolio and solutions along with industry expertise needed to implement a hybrid cloud strategy.

  1. Public Cloud

The other option could be to fully embrace the public cloud. The migration to public cloud can be achieved in a couple of different ways, each bringing its own advantages and disadvantages.

Lift and Shift

In this scenario, the application and its components are migrated without any changes to the application itself. The application does not become cloud native and is not able to leverage the elastic nature of the cloud; however the time and costs involved with migration are the lowest.

Evolutionary

Application and related components are migrated to a container form factor which provides the benefits of container technology and leverage the ephemeral nature of containers. The costs associated are lower and help the customer become more agile.

Transformational

Microservices truly help transform the customer experience provided by an application. Cloud native attributes leverage all the benefits of a cloud environment. Typically, microservices implementation requires the application to be re-architected for interaction via APIs. This involves some cost, however it transforms the application development and delivery process, making DevOps more agile and flexible.

migrate and transfer

Once applications are migrated to the cloud, it is important to ensure that application performance is acceptable and the cloud is secure. All cloud providers provide and application and services, however any support, performance and security are the application owner’s responsibility. Cloud operations is a highly specialized skill set and requires years of operational expertise.

Have the following questions?

I want to know if public cloud is for me. Help me move to the public cloud. Can you evaluate which applications I should move to the cloud? Which cloud should I move to and many others….
